2019.05.06 15:04 NotUsefulDoc Queer Erasure (Text of Story)

Here's the text:

Queer Erasure
For the first time, a gay person is being taken seriously as a legitimate contender for the presidency of the United States of America. Unfortunately, homophobia and structural heterosexism are still present in our social and political systems, and this extends to the coverage of Pete Buttigieg in the Democratic primary race.
Queer erasure
What is so incredibly frustrating in the recent backlash to media coverage of Buttigieg, is that so-called allies and liberals are taking an inherently conservative approach in their criticisms by ignoring Buttigieg’s sexual orientation. You cannot lop off and look at facets of a person’s identity discretely. Buttigieg is always gay. He was born gay, wakes up gay, eats gay, goes to sleep gay, breathes gay, and walks around gay.
By focusing almost exclusively on his race and sex, critics are erasing his status as a gay person to highlight his privileges as a white, cis man. This is heterosexist, queer erasure. Clearly he is also always white and always a cis man. There is no question that membership in these groups gives him unearned social benefits. And yet.
LGBTQ people are consistently removed from their own stories. Because we live in a racist and sexist society, queer erasure often hits women and people of color first and hardest. They live at the intersection of multiple oppressions. Lesbians — and often lesbians of color — are erased. Historically, lesbians with AIDS have been under-served or even outright excluded when it comes to AIDS activism, education, and research.
Trans people are so marginalized even within the queer community that the “T” in LGBT is often treated like a joke or an afterthought. They are subjected to enormous amounts of violence, while still having to argue for their right to exist and to be treated as the women and men that they are.
The recent Freddie Mercury biopic erased a bisexual person from his own biography. The Hays Code kept queer representation in media to a minimum. And the representation that was there, wasn’t particularly great.
That doesn’t even touch ignoring queer people in K-12 education. Several states actively have “no promo homo” laws which forbid schools from integrating LGBTQ education into the classroom. California is the only state that requires LGBTQ inclusive education. Most schools will ignore LGBTQ people and the influence they had on history and culture. This contributes to environments where more than half of LGBTQ students feel unsafe at school.
While LGBTQ women and men of color and LGBTQ white women bear the brunt of erasure, white gay men are also erased — in both media and real life. Years ago, Keith Olbermann hosted a news program called Countdown. During one show, he read an email from a woman who advocated for homophobia by quoting Walt Whitman. Olbermann responded that she should look into Whitman’s probable dating habits. When we erase queer people from their own contributions, we create a society that teaches us queer people contribute nothing.
Erasing queer discrimination
By ignoring a significant part of Buttigieg’s identity, the criticism is perpetuating the queer erasure that has gone on for decades. It further erases the marginalization he has experienced as a gay man, which is significant and systemic.
There are obvious examples. Buttigieg joined and served in the armed forces under “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.” He grew up with the knowledge that he could not get married and have a family like straight people. He believed — because of queer erasure — that he was the lone gay person in high school, and almost certainly would not have been exposed to positive examples of LGBTQ people and the work they did.
But there are other systemic issues as well, which are wrapped up in the way the media and people online talk about him and the others in the race.
It’s fair and necessary to analyze why Buttigieg’s intelligence makes him “charming” to reporters while Warren gets described as a cold professor. But if someone is going to be critical of or diminish Buttigieg’s list of personal accomplishments, it needs to be put in the proper context.
There is a strong argument that closeted gay men and boys are driven to “overachieve” because growing up in a homophobic, heteronormative culture leaves them personally adrift. It’s called the best little boy in the world hypothesis. They instead channel their energies into academic and professional accomplishments. This is literally something Buttigieg has said that he did, in both an Anderson Cooper CNN Townhall and an interview with Rachel Maddow on MSNBC. Mocking or minimizing Buttigieg as a “wunderkid” misunderstands and undermines the amount of effort some gay men put into creating a space for themselves where they can be successful.
Likewise, to argue that Buttigieg must be elected to statewide office before running for president or argue that it’s ludicrous that someone with little experience is being taken more seriously than qualified women, ignores that only .1% of elected officials are out LGBTQ people. Which LGBTQ people should be “allowed” to run, exactly? There are hardly any in any elected office!
Of course, women and people of color are also underrepresented. Obviously, LGBTQ people include women and people color. They’ve got vanishingly few positions of political power. It remains true, however, that there are proportionately more straight women in office than queer people of any sex.
Furthermore, the most recent nationwide survey on the topic indicated that people are less likely to vote for an LGBTQ candidate than a woman or a black person (of note is the lack of intersectionality: what about a black woman?). Buttigieg comes from a conservative state that lacks hate crimes legislation. It is simply true that structural homophobia makes it enormously more difficult for him to win a state-wide election in Indiana.
That does not mean that anyone has to accept that a mayor of a mid-sized city is qualified to be president. At the same time, ignoring why his experience looks like it does is to disregard systemic homophobia that keeps LGBTQ politicians from garnering more traditional political experience. Additionally, to say that Buttigieg should not even run for president ignores a huge intangible benefit to his candidacy: creating visibility which can help more LGBTQ people get elected.
Erasing media bias against queer people
It is true, and Buttigieg himself has acknowledged, that white cis men find it easier to get positive media coverage. This has turned into reflexively criticizing his media coverage, without any selectivity. The very same day it was revealed that Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten, were on the cover of TIME magazine, the White House made it easier for healthcare workers to discriminate against them. The TIME magazine cover was specifically and obviously not some frivolous puff piece about the candidate. It was very clearly about the historic nature of his candidacy and family. It was still criticized as an example of how the media is ignoring women. The current administration is openly and actively trying to harm LGBTQ people. Articles like the one in TIME magazine are incredibly necessary, and not worthy of condemnation.
On top of this, more traditional homophobic media coverage is beginning to emerge, and there are few allies calling it out. The media is amplifying and making viral moments out of homophobic protesters at Buttigieg’s events. This can spread and validate people’s homophobia, especially when unchallenged.
Recently, Franklin Graham called on Buttigieg to repent for being gay, Twitter users, thankfully, thoroughly eviscerated him. Less noticed, however, is the next day both CNN and MSNBC had homophobes on to debate Buttigieg’s right to exist. Rick Santorum — yes, that Rick Santorum — was given a platform to discuss whether Buttigieg can be gay and Christian. As though this is still an open question.
There are other microagressions beginning to pop up. After mentioning that he and his husband want to have kids, the anchor on CNN’s New Day tried to get Buttigieg to discuss whether they’d be using a surrogate, fostering, or adopting a kid. This is a bizarrely invasive question to ask someone, and has zero relevance to how Buttigieg would govern.
Why aren’t we calling this out with the same ferocity we call out the sexist coverage of women in the race?
Buttigieg and his team are undoubtedly aware of these challenges, but cannot actively address them in the same way that Obama could not point out racist coverage and Clinton could not point out sexist coverage: he’d be seen as whiner and the media would turn on him. It is up to allies to point these issues out and not enough people are.
Erasing the horror of the closet
One of the most destructive narratives cropping up around Buttigieg’s identity, is the notion that as a gay, white, cis man, with a pretty traditionally masculine gender performance, Buttigieg could (and did) reap the privileges of his whiteness and cisgender maleness while he was closeted.
This is an unconscionable erasure of the harm that being in the closet can do.
The closet kills people. The closet kills people. “Passing” or being closeted is not the type of privilege awarded cishet white men. It is at most a reasonable facsimile of privilege. While closeted, Buttigieg could certainly get paid more than a woman or a person of color, but unlike straight peers was trapped in a heteronormative, psychological ordeal.
This isn’t speculation; Buttigieg has discussed this with remarkable openness and courage. He, like many gay people before him, has exposed himself in some of the most vulnerable parts of person’s identity to explain how and why he is who he is. He has talked about how “humiliating” and “confusing” it was that he was an adult and had never been in love. He has talked about how he had to go to a literal war before being able to tell the world who he was. He has talked about how as a child he wished he could cut out the part of himself that made him gay.
This type of deep, internalized homophobia is not unique. It is exactly what contributes to high suicide rates for LGBTQ children. Yet when we have someone who so eloquently and so personally talks about how heteronormativity and homophobia shaped his life, he’s met with derision that — had he just stayed in the closet — society would see him only as a white man. That is exactly the problem. LGBTQ people shouldn’t have to pass or hide and when they try it is massively damaging to them.
Erasing queer greatness
Not only does this type of criticism erase the challenges and discrimination that Buttigieg faced and faces, but it also erases queer greatness.
One of the very reasonable critiques of LGBTQ representation in the media is the lack of hopeful, happy stories. This is not to imply queer people need to be happy, gay minstrels, but rather they deserve to be seen in the fullness of the human reality. This means highlighting struggles and discrimination, but also happy endings and successes.
People keep jumping into the race, and some of the underlying reporting reveals that people think to themselves, “Well, if the mayor of South Bend can do it, why can’t I?”
There is an easy answer to this question: You’re not as good as Pete Buttigieg.
It is unquestionably true that he has gotten beneficial media coverage in part because he is a white man, but to reduce his success to the privilege of being a white cis man, is ignore just how impressive he is. This goes beyond the laundry list of languages he speaks or his fancy degrees.
Buttigieg is an extraordinarily good politician. His book was so well reviewed and his comms people so good, that it made the New York Times bestseller list before most people knew who he was. The first CNN townhall he participated in was astonishing. He was affecting and polished. He connected with people. His perspective is different than anyone else’s in the race. He understands the new media environment that helped get Trump elected. He understands, for all the backlash he’s now facing, that people vote based on feelings, not logical calculations, so he appropriately led with a strategy that allowed his name and values to get out there.
When he was only 34 years old, before he even ran for the DNC chair, the sitting U.S. President and one of the greatest American politicians to ever live named Buttigieg as a future leader of the Democratic party. You do not get that kind of endorsement at that age and with that admittedly short résumé because you are a mediocre white man who coasts by on privilege.
To reduce Buttigieg to “just another white man” reduces all his talents. But it also deprives the LGBTQ community and others of a chance to celebrate queer greatness. It is not that all (or any!) LGBTQ people need to support him. It is not that he is great solely because he is gay. Instead, it should be an opportunity to show that gay people can also be talented, and smart, and extraordinary. That they can be lauded by presidents as leaders. That they don’t have to hide in the closet. That they can be seen as their full and total selves and be taken seriously for their ideas and what they bring to the table. In other words, Buttigieg’s candidacy shows that queer people can be great.
It is possible and indeed necessary to talk about the benefits Buttigieg gets both within the queer community and the straight community by virtue of being a white cis man. But if you cannot fully unpack the way his sexual orientation influences both his privileges and the oppression that he faces, you are merely erasing a huge part of who he is. And queer erasure is unacceptable.

2019.02.11 01:30 BudRock56 MSNBC’s Katy Tur(d)

So here I am, sitting at home on a Sunday evening. I just finished a delicious dinner while watching the news. Of particular note, I managed to catch a replay of NBC’s “Meet The Depressed” hosted by little Chucky Todd. I only got to see the final 15 minutes of it. But, I did get to see a panel segment on the Bezos dick-pic thing that included Katy Tur. I noticed something odd about Katy: she is getting fat. I got curious, so I looked on Wiki and learned that she is knocked-up.
I have made no move to cover up the fact that I find Katy spectacularly smoking hot. However, I note that based upon the afternoon show she hosts on MSNBC, she is not particularly intelligent, and she is incredibly biased toward the left. In fact, when Trump held his rally in Georgia right before the 2018 midterm elections, Katy was there to interview Trump supporters. They did a great job of editing the interviews and selecting interviews to include on TV to support their false narrative that Trump supporters are slack-jawed yokels. I was at this rally and I can tell you that it was 80% packed with regular, middle class folks, contrary to what Katy portrayed. Frankly, if I had known Katy was there then I would have moved in and heckled her.
Anyway, I checked out Tur’s Wiki today and learned a couple interesting things. Stay with me here, because the last fact is a doozy. First, she was born to a couple of journalists who were around back in the hippy days. Second, she went to college in California. Third, she has only worked in media. Fourth, she dated Keith Olbermann for THREE YEARS! Yes, the same obnoxious, leftist POS Keith Olbermann that used to constantly spew toxic shit on MSNBC.
Finally, and this is the GRAND SLAM of stupid, Katy has apparently had a falling out with her father that resulted in the two of them not talking for a long time. The problem? Dad decided to transition into a woman. That’s right, daddy got snipped in exchange for some new nips, and Katy apparently did not take the news well. This is odd since the left celebrates trannies and sexual mutilation. But it was apparently too much bullshit for Katy to have in her own family. I note that in the footnote in the article it says that daddy wrote a blistering Facebook post calling Katy transphobic.
I read this and infer the following: Katy has led a sheltered life and has not been exposed by much diversity in thought. I find her transphobia to be a positive thing. I think that with enough deep-dicking by the right man she may be able to overcome her ideological handicap and become a real person.

2017.11.21 03:07 Grace8543 Stories to follow that seem to be some fulfillment of the large promises made by Q. Is Q's checklist in progress? HRC's day is coming no matter what!

Q's hit list (ppl/things he has suggested will fall) in progress:
Soros-Tweeted today to try to defend himself from wide spread criticism in Hungary. This is only the beginning for him. Farage calls him out and his 256 "reliable politicians" puppets in EU parilament. (awesome if you have not seen it. Farage is a Bernie like independent representing a district in England)
Israel-Netanyahu questioned 4 hours by police for corruption. globalist
Germany-Merkel forced to hold snap vote & likely won't be re-elected. Globalist
Pedophiles-being rounded up, will they all lead to the satanists( HRC and many more)
Ms-13-being rounded up
John McCain- phony excuse of absence due to brain surgery now wearing a boot that would easily cover a security monitor. ( Hillary has the matching boot. Loretta wore one late in 2016. Where is she? would we even know if she has been arrested. Media black out can be a terms of surrender for the rich)
Us corruption-now 1800 plus indictments prepared against. 10 congressmen will not seek re-election. Brazlle/Uranium1 whistle blower.
Clinton Cabal- HRC booted, Tony company in ashes and the net is closing.
Fed Reserve/Rothchilds- the Baron "feared dead" after plane crash near estate, Distress call form Lynn de Rothschild previous to crash.
Saud's-first up on Q's list. 1 of Clinton's puppet masters. (as well as Bush's, Obama's)
CIA- uncertain rumors Marines stormed Langley yesterday and took control. Resident around the area say they saw/heard several loud Ospreys land around the building and armed marines quickly enter the building
Deep state broadcasters who are deep cover CIA removed-where are Anderson Cooper's, Charlie Rose's, Keith Olbermann' shows Antifa-declared terrorist group
Yet to come out/start: Pope and corruption/relationship with Rothchilds overlords Queen Elizabeth/Illuminati and probably a few others others I'm not thinking of.
I know we all thought Q's "happening" would start off with a bang but that was a threat to stop ANTIFA from rioting. Because the "rioters" were hired mercenaries, Soros called it off avoiding riots/marshall law for now.The predsident can not call up the national guard but can take control of them once they are activated by the state governor. The message let them know the NG is several states had already been activated. Soros was outmanned and arrests would have lead back to him. And we all thought when he said there were indictments for people we thought that meant we would see arrests soon. Then we learned that indictments actually OFTEN happen after the subject has already been arrested. Papadopoulos was arrested 6 months ago but we never knew it due to deal for media blackout in return for surrender. So, those indictments will lead not just to arrests but in many cases incarceration or a court appearance to set a date for trial.
The reality is a lot can happen behind the scenes and we can see events in our news that suggest he was telling the truth.

2017.07.30 19:51 unclefishbits I was trying to explain to my friends about the guest stars, and cameos, on Bojack Horseman. There wasn't a complete list, so I made a quick one.

Simpsons may have more guests, but for 3 years it is amazing to pull the like of McCartney, et al. And Martindale is a delight.

2017.07.30 19:49 unclefishbits I made a simple, updated, alphabetical list of all the guest stars, cameos, etc.

Feel free to add any, subtract, correct, add names of characters, etc. I was looking for one to explain to my friends how wild this show is, but there wasn't one. So thanks to Sunday morning, I did it. Not sure alphabetical is best, but whatever:

2017.07.10 05:18 Tyrion_Baelish_Varys [RECAP] JUNE 29TH - Voter Fraud Commission and Pushback, Election Security Taskforce, McCain's Opinion Article, Trump-Putin Meeting Prep, Flynn & Russian Hackers, Pence, Kasowitz-Kushner, Sessions, Haley, Rice, The 25th Amendment, And More

On May 11th Trump signed an executive order to create an " Election Integrity Commission" after he claimed, without evidence, that 3 to 5 million undocumented immigrants voted illegally.
The vice chairman of the commission, Kansas Sec. of State Kobach, has now "penned a letter to all 50 states requesting their full voter-roll data, including the name, address, date of birth, party affiliation, last four Social Security number digits and voting history back to 2006 of potentially every voter in the state." "Kobach has made it a central issue of his tenure in Kansas and has secured nine voter-fraud convictions. Most were older Republican voters."
Immediately following this multiple states, both majorly Democratic and Republican, have refused to turn anything over. California, New York, Kentucky and Virginia have said they will refuse to comply with the request.
"Gupta, chief executive of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights and former head of the Justice Department's civil rights division said that the letter is "laying the groundwork for voter suppression, plain & simple." "A federal judge ruled that some of Kobach's proposed ID requirements constituted a “mass denial of a fundamental constitutional right."
COURANT - THE HILL - TIME - WASHINGTON POST - WFPL.ORG
McCain, in an opinion piece in USA Today, writes that the "Russia threat is dead serious" Montenegro coup and murder plot proves it." Following the Senate Intel hearing with 4 officials yesterday about Russian interference in Europe, McCain writes that Putin has violent ambitions in the small Balkan country where "Russian politicians and oligarchs are reported to own as much as 40% of the real estate." The coup attempt by Russian intelligence operatives involved overthrowing the government and murdering the prime minister. Montenegro is seen as an important place for Russia because of its access to the Adriatic Sea which would be completely under NATO control if Montenegro decided to joined (as it did on June 5th 2017 following the election). "Russia unsuccessfully sought a naval base in Montenegro a few years ago."
McCain writes that the Oct. 16 election was "a last chance to stop [Montenegro] from joining NATO and to reassert Russian influence in southeastern Europe."
"This month, a Montenegrin court accepted indictments against two Russians and 12 other people for their roles in the coup attempt. The American people must be aware of the allegations made in these indictments, which are now public. Pieced together, they reveal not only another blatant attack on democracy by the Russian government, but also an unmistakable warning that Putin will do whatever it takes to achieve his ambition to restore the Russian empire."
The plan was this: "As Election Day protests were under way in front of the Montenegrin parliament, a group of 50 armed men, recruited by the Russian GRU agents and wearing police uniforms, would ambush and kill the members of Montenegro’s Special Anti-Terrorist Unit to prevent them from interfering with the coup. The armed men would then proceed to the parliament, where they'd begin shooting at members of the police defending the building. Led by the coup plotters, the protesters would then storm parliament and declare victory for the opposition. Within 48 hours, a new government would be formed and arrests would be made across the capital, including of Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic. If the prime minister could not be captured, he'd be killed. It appears the plot might even have involved trying to blame the United States for the violence. Arrests were made, and the plot was disrupted. In the aftermath, the Russian GRU agents tried to hire an assassin to kill Montenegro’s prime minister, but to no avail."
McCain continues, "This heinous plot should be a warning to every American that we cannot treat Russia’s interference in our 2016 election as an isolated incident. We have to stop looking at this through the warped lens of politics and see this attack on our democracy for what it is: just one phase of Putin’s long-term campaign to weaken the United States, to destabilize Europe, to break the NATO alliance, to undermine confidence in Western values, and to erode any and all resistance to his dangerous view of the world."
USA TODAY - CONGRESSIONAL RECORD
Trump asked National Security Council staff to come up with "deliverables to offer as bargaining chips in his planned meeting with Putin," "including the return of the two diplomatic compounds," previously seized. Reportedly there is NSC and State Dept. resistance to offering "one-sided concessions aimed simply at improving the tone of US-Russian relations" and administration resistance to a formal bilateral meeting. Cohn, Trump's chief economic adviser, said the White House expected the meeting to be a formal bilateral one rather than an informal "pull-aside" conversation
The return of compounds was contemplated " initially in exchange for the Russian government lifting a freeze on construction of a new US consulate in St Petersburg" but this was dropped after Tillerson met with Lavrov on May 10th. Farakas, former deputy assistant secretary of state in the defense department for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia, said "If Trump starts to undo any of those measures, including giving back the facilities in Maryland and New York then the Russian government will believe … they got away with what they did to us and believe me, they’ll try it again. Putin himself uses that phrase all the time: ‘With the eating grows the appetite’."
BUSINESS INSIDER - WASHINGTON POST - THE GUARDIAN
Citing US intelligence reports, Russian hackers attempted to use an intermediary to transfer Clinton's hacked emailed to Flynn. The intermiediary, according to the Wall Street Journal, "may have been Peter Smith (who is now deceased), an 80-year-old opposition researcher who assembled a team of technology experts, lawyers and a Russian-speaking investigator in September to track down hacking groups with access to the 33,000 emails Clinton deleted from her private server."
Smith had a "working relationship with Flynn's consulting firm, when trying to recruit new team members." ... "He told Eric York, an expert on computer security from Atlanta who searched the hacker forums on his behalf, that he was "talking to Michael Flynn" about the project and to let him know if he found anything."
"Russian officials bragged about their close relationship to Flynn last year and boasted that they could use him to influence Trump. The way the Russians were talking about Flynn "was a five-alarm fire from early on," a former Obama administration official said."
"A Trump campaign official said that Smith didn’t work for the campaign, and that if Flynn coordinated with him in any way, it would have been in his capacity as a private individual."
BUSINESS INSIDER - FOX NEWS - MSNBC VIDEO 1 - MSNBC VIDEO 2 - WSJ
"All 34 Democratic members of the House judiciary and oversight committees have asked Inspector General Michael Horowitz to investigate Sessions for allegedly violating his recusal from ongoing investigations into Russia's interference in the election and the Trump campaign's possible role in it." The letter said, "Since the Department has failed to respond to multiple previous inquiries on this matter — despite promising to do so — we now ask that your office investigate and report back to us with any findings and recommendations you determine are warranted"
Although Sessions, during his testimony on June 13th, claims that he recused himself based on a Justice Dept. requirement that he do so due to the investigation being into the campaign which he was part of, he offered the recusal 1 day after the Washington Post reported, on March 1st, that he had failed to disclose two meetings he had with Kislyak during the campaign.
"The letter from House judiciary and oversight Democrats lays out their assertion that Sessions violated his recusal by discussing the Hillary Clinton email investigation with Rosenstein, and by recommending that Trump fire Comey"

Kasowitz, who advises Trump on the investigation into Russia's interference is head of a law firm that in 2015 represented the owner of a $296m New York real estate which was sold to Kushner, "in a deal that could fall under the spotlight of the same inquiry." Deutsche Bank reportedly loaned $285m to Kushner Companies for the purchase of the building. Kasowtiz also represents another possible conflict of interest entity, Russia’s largest bank OJSC Sberbank. Because Deutsche Bank may fall under Mueller's investigation, Kasowitz may be in a conflict of interest. However, his spokesman said in a statement, "There are no conflicts under any standard or by any definition."
Other potential current and past conflicts involve David Friedman, a partner at Kasowitz's law firm who was appointed ambassador to Israel; Joe Lieberman, the firm's senior counsel was considered as replacement director of the FBI; another partner, "Edward McNally, is reportedly in the running to replace Preet Bharara as US attorney for the southern district of New York," who Trump had fired and Kasowitz allegedly "bragged to friends that he played a role in having Bharara fired, by telling Trump: "This guy is going to get you." One of the major investigations conducted by the southern district of New York under Bharara was allegedly to look into Deutsche Bank’s involvement in alleged Russian money-laundering."
The property bought by Kushner was owned by one of Israel's richest businessman, Lev Leviev, whose Delaware LLC that bought the building in 2007, is registered at Trump's property (40 Wall Street) where Trump University existed. Leviev "claimed that he is a "true friend" of Putin."

The Republican chairman and Democratic co-chairman of the House Intel Committee, in a joint statement, stated that the White House needs to clarify the existence of the Oval Office Comey tapes because a tweet isn't enough. The statement in part said, "The President's statement on Twitter, and the White House's letter referring to the President's statement, were only partially responsive to the Committee's request. By only referring to the President's statement, the White House's letter stops short of clarifying for the Committee whether the White House has any responsive recordings, memoranda, or other documents. Today's letter from the Committee makes clear that should the White House not respond fully, the Committee will consider using compulsory process to ensure a satisfactory response."

Sen. Corker "said lawmakers have an agreement and are working to fast-track the bill in the Senate so that it can pass a second time without a formal vote." Schumer and McConell have signed off on the bill. "The breakthrough comes less than a day after Corker warned that negotiations had reached a "point of total silliness" focused on "three words" of the roughly 140-page bill." Corker added, "I talked to Speaker Ryan last night late and I know they plan to take the bill up. We should have done this on Tuesday it would have already passed the House." ... "This is a technical issue that changes in no way the context of the bill."
Ryan said, of the bill's blockage in the House, "They wrote the bill incorrectly. They did not pass it correctly — they violated constitutional protocols."
Schumer said, "We wanted to send a message to Putin: If you interfere with our democratic institutions, you will be punished. It's important for Speaker Ryan to act on this legislation before July 4 recess."

Haley, as ambassador to the UN, stated that she and Trump haven't discussed Russia's meddling in the election, "currently one of the most prominent issues facing the US." The admission to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs came as a stun to Democrats. Rep. Meeks stated that he was "actually stunned" by the response. Haley stated that it is not part of her position's concern, even though Russia is one of the 5 permanent members of the UN security council which holds veto power.

In a press release, representatives Thompson, Brady and Pelosi "announced the formation of a Task Force to ensure the health and security of our nation’s election systems." "The Congressional Task Force on Election Security will address the lack of action to protect electoral infrastructure following Russia interfering and attempting to influence the 2016 Presidential election." The press release states, "To this day, we have seen no action from the Republican Congress or the Trump Administration to provide greater protection to our election systems." "The Congressional Task Force on Election Security is intended to be a forum for Members from the two Committees to hear from experts with expertise in cybersecurity and election infrastructure and identify policy recommendations that can help ensure the integrity of our election systems and guard against future attacks. "
Statements from Pelosi, Thompson and Brady were included. Pelosi stated that "we see an appalling absence of action, or even concern, from Trump and Congressional Republicans." Thompson stated, "If we continue to do nothing to protect the integrity of our election systems, we make it easy for Russia and other nefarious actors to impact future elections" and also criticized the administration and Congressional Republicans for a lack of response. Brady stated, "Free, fair, and secure elections are the cornerstone of our democracy, and Congress must take action to address this threat to our election security, and our national security."

The HIC wants to hold a close-door interview with Rice in July as part of its investigation into Russia meddling. "Trump and Republicans have focused on allegations that Rice revealed the names of Trump's transition aides in intelligence reports -- called "unmasking" -- saying that Obama officials were seeking to divulge damaging information about the Trump campaign." " Republican and Democratic lawmakers who reviewed the intelligence reports found no evidence that Obama administration officials did anything unusual or illegal."
"Two weeks after Nunes took a secret trip to the White House grounds to review intelligence about unmasking, Bloomberg reported that Rice had "unmasked" the names of Trump transition aides in classified reports. Three days after Rice's name was revealed, Nunes became the subject of a House ethics probe into whether he revealed classified information and was forced to step aside from leading the House Russia investigation."

Trump's tweet attacks on Mika Brzezinski over an alleged facelift invoke calls for usage of section 4 of the 25th amendment. The tweets were: "I heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (don't watch anymore). Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year's Eve, and insisted on joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!"
"The Constitutional provision, which has never been used, can be invoked when a president has been found to be "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office." A majority of the cabinet has to agree that the president is unable to discharge the duties of the office in order to invoke the provision. The order of events would be as follows:
Following Trump's tweet Hatch tweeted, "It’s incumbent on all of us, then — from the President to Congress on down — to be responsible for our speech." along with a Time article that has his quoted saying, "Either we remain passive observers to the problem, or we endeavor to act." To which Keith Olbermann tweeted, "Then help invoke Section 4 of the 25th Amendment and remove Trump. Do it today. His irresponsible speech is destroying this country."
In a Rolling Stone article, Joe Scarborough recalls the escalating fallout they've had with Trump since 2015 and especially since the election.

  • JUNE 28TH - SIC Hearing On Russian Interference in Europe, Trump's Reluctance, Various SIC Business, Kaspersky Lab Restrictions, Sekulow's Charity Investigation, DIA Report On Kremlin US Regime Change Fears, And More
  • (A) - SENATE INTEL HEARING ON RUSSIAN INTERVENTION IN EUROPEAN ELECTIONS
  • Burns
  • Burr
  • Garcevic
  • Lavrov (by extension)
  • Sarts
  • Stelzenmueller
  • Warner
The SIC held a hearing on Russian attempts to influence European elections with 4 individuals; Stelzenmueller, expert on German, European, and transatlantic foreign and security policy and strategy and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, Garcevic, former ambassador to Montenegro, Burns, former ambassador to Greece and NATO, and Sarts, former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.
Garcevic's testimony "focused on steps taken by the Montenegrin government to counter such interference and recommendations to further counter Russian efforts to interfere in the elections of NATO countries." "According to Garcevic, plotters disguised in police uniforms were preparing to storm the Montenegrin Parliament and provoke turmoil by shooting at citizens waiting for election results. The plotters also intended to detain or assassinate the Prime Minister, Garcevic testified. Acting on a tip from an informant, Montenegrin police were able to arrest most of the plot suspects." "14 people were charged, including two opposition politicians and two Russian agents... of the Russian Military Intelligence Service, who are identified as the ringleaders of the operation, Garcevic testified." They "used about $230,000 from Russia for weapons, uniforms, shields and other equipment for the attack on the Parliament." "Garcevic’s written testimony noted that a suspected "key plotter still at large" named Nemanja Ristic was photographed months after the failed coup "standing near Russian foreign minister Lavrov."
"Moscow has made no progress in Montenegro, and it has seemingly lost a possibility of having a strategically significant outlet on the Adriatic Sea," Garcevic said. "But, Moscow will continue exploiting loopholes that exist in most of the Balkans states: democratic incapacity, corruption, ethnic tensions, countries’ economic and military needs, and growing feelings of marginalization of those countries ‘on the path’ to the EU and NATO."
Warner explained that, "Russia’s blatant interference in the United States’ 2016 presidential election was unprecedented in scale and scope, and we’ve seen it replicated across Europe. In fact, Russia’s active measures are only growing bolder and more brazen in the digital age."
Burns told lawmakers, "I find it dismaying and objectionable that Trump continues to deny the undeniable fact that Russia launched a major cyber attack against the United States, regardless of what party they launched it against." He urges Congress to impose tougher sanctions on Russia.
Stelzenmueller said "In many ways its meddling in European elections over the past year has produced the exact opposite of what was intended. It has produced stable, democratic, and non-populace governments that are pro-European Union and, indeed, pro-NATO, pro-American." However she added that the real threat are Russian attempts to get inside "voters heads." She said, "they're trying to hack our political consciousness."
Sarts "recommended that European nations and the U.S. must first create "societal awareness" of cyber attacks and collaborate with media organizations to help them understand "how they might be manipulated."

  • (B) - TRUMP WON'T ACCEPT THAT RUSSIA INTERFERED IN ELECTION
  • Burns
  • Comey (by extension)
  • Rogers
  • Sessions (by extension)
  • Trump
Several officials, most notably NSA Director Rogers, have expressed frustration over Trump's unwillingness to accept that Russia interfered in the election. "Rogers vented frustration over his fruitless efforts to lawmakers during a recent closed-door briefing on Capitol Hill." Rogers "also reportedly said the White House lacked focus about the continued threat of the Kremlin's cyber efforts, especially regarding voting systems." In an open Senate Intel Committee a senior administration official said that he's seen no evidence, such as schedules, readouts or briefing documents, "to indicate Trump has dedicated time to the issue." Former ambassador to NATO Burns, "a career foreign service officer who served under presidents of both parties" told the SIC that if Trump "continues to refuse to act it's a dereliction of the basic duty to defend the country." Comey, during the SIC hearing, had stated that during his nine conversations with Trump, he didn't ask him about the interference. Sessions, during his briefing, testified that "he had never received a briefing on Russia's election meddling efforts -- even before he officially recused himself from the collusion investigation."

  • (C) - STONE TO TESTIFY IN CLOSED HOUSE INTEL HEARING
  • HIC
  • Podesta (by extension)
  • Stone
Stone will testify in a closed hearing before the House Intel Committee on July 24th. He said that he wanted to testify in public in order to rebut Podesta's claims made before the HIC on June 27th, that he had "knowledge of the hacking of Podesta's email by WikiLeaks in advance," but "was told by the GOP-led House panel, that "they're done with public [hearings]." Stone had "talked in March about being in touch with Guccifer 2.0 ... and boasted during the campaign about his contact with WikiLeaks. "Stone predicted last summer on Twitter that there would be an October surprise that would disrupt Clinton’s campaign, and he even suggested Podesta would face scandal shortly before the Democrat’s emails started surfacing on WikiLeaks."

  • (D) - SIC FOCUSED ON FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS OF TRUMP ASSOCIATES
  • Burr
  • SIC
  • Warner
The SIC is now reviewing over 2,000 documents it received from FinCEN, the Treasury Department's financial crimes unit, after reported negotiations "to hold up a Treasury nominee until they received the information," according to Warner. However a Treasure spokesman disputed the notion, stating, "Any suggestion that Treasury’s cooperation with the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence was the product of ‘protracted negotiations’ is incorrect. Treasury’s staff has devoted countless hours to providing a prompt and professional response to the committee’s requests, and any comments to the contrary are baseless and inappropriate. Treasury remains committed to cooperating with the committee."
Burr noted that "It’s hard to assess [whether any of the documents will be relevant to the probe]. This won’t be the first tranche of documents that we’ve gotten that were of little to no value. We haven’t gotten any new leads, I’ll put it that way." He also said that the committee had received a commitment that his panel would get access to Comey's memos.

  • (E) - SIC ASKS STATE ELECTION OFFICIALS FOR INTERFERENCE INFORMATION
  • Burr
  • SIC
  • Warner
After officials refused to identify which states were affected by Russian interference "citing the need to protect the confidentiality of the states affected", Burr and Warner "asked election officials in 21 states to make public information about Russian efforts to hack their elections systems." Warner said, "as the oversight committee for all intelligence issues, this committee is entitled to have this information."

  • Kaspersky
  • Kaspersky Lab
  • Rubio
"A provision in a Senate spending bill that is likely to become law would bar the Defense Department from doing business with Kaspersky Lab, the Russian cyber-security company whose employees were interviewed at their homes this week by FBI agents." "The decision to ban the products within the National Defense Authorization Act, comes after the FBI visited at least 10 Kaspersky employees' homes."
This also comes after Rubio asked chiefs of the NSA, CIA, FBI, and 3 other intelligence agencies during a hearing, "whether they would be comfortable using Kaspersky products. Each said no." The company "sells anti-virus software across the world to consumers, businesses and government agencies, including some elements of the U.S. government." The company's owner, Eugene Kaspersky "graduated in 1987 from the Soviet KGB-backed Institute of Cryptography, Telecommunications, and Computer Science." The company paid Flynn $11,250 in 2015 "for cyber-security consulting."
"In a statement, Kaspersky Lab said it "has no ties to any government, and the company has never helped, nor will help, any government in the world with its cyberespionage efforts. The company has a 20-year history in the IT security industry of always abiding by the highest ethical business practices, and Kaspersky Lab believes it is completely unacceptable that the company is being unjustly accused without any hard evidence to back up these false allegations. Kaspersky Lab is available to assist all concerned government organizations with any ongoing investigations, and the company ardently believes a deeper examination of Kaspersky Lab will confirm that these allegations are unfounded."

Revealed from Manafort's foreign agent registration is a report that he donated $1,000 to Rep. Rohrabacher 3 days after meeting him on March 19th, 2013. Rohrabacher "praised Putin by saying "I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a country being led by a ruler who wants their country to be a great country." As a result Rohrabacher has earned the epithet "Putin’s favorite congressman." Previous leaked reports of secret undisputed conversations among top GOP politicians indicate that House Majority Leader, Kevin McCarthy, said, "There's two people I think Putin pays, Rohrabacher and Trump." "In the Post piece, McCarthy’s remark is met with laughter, and Ryan cautions his colleagues, “This is an off the record . . . No leaks! . . . All right?" And then, amid more laughter, Ryan says, "This is how we know we’re a real family here." "That’s how you know that we’re tight," Steve Scalise, the House Majority Whip, says. "What’s said in the family stays in the family," Ryan concludes."

After initial threats to file complaints against Comey's release of the his memos, Kasowitz has now postponed the filing, reportedly in an attempt to "stop antagonizing the special counsel" and "tamp down the confrontation Trump initially stoked with Mueller" according to "a person familiar with the decision."
"Norman Eisen, Obama’s former ethics czar and chairman of the advocacy group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, promised to file a defense of Comey. He has called the planned Trump complaint "an abuse of process" in a Twitter message and added: "beware there are serious consequences for abuse of process."
Kasowitz said in a statement, "We will leave it to the appropriate authorities to determine whether these leaks should be investigated along with all the others being investigated."
According to Mark Zaid, a veteran national security lawyer in Washington who often represents government officials facing investigations in security investigations. "This is consistent with Donald Trump’s style — making blustery attacks with no follow-through and idle threats to intimidate with no substance."

  • (J) - INTEL REPORT: KREMLIN SEES US URGING REGIME CHANGE IN RUSSIA & AMPING UP MILITARY CAPACITIES
  • Yanukovych (by extension)
According to a Defense Intelligence Agency report prepared before the 2016 election, Russia is concerned that the US is trying to change regime in the Kremlin. The report cites Russia has, "deep and abiding distrust of US efforts to promote democracy around the world and what it perceives as a US campaign to impose a single set of global values." "Moscow worries that U.S. attempts to dictate a set of acceptable international norms threatens the foundations of Kremlin power by giving license for foreign meddling in Russia's internal affairs."
Furthermore "the Kremlin is convinced the US is laying the groundwork for regime change in Russia, a conviction further reinforced by the events in Ukraine", the report says, referring to claims by Russian claims that the US engineered a popular uprising that led to the removal of a pro-Russian Ukrainian president, Yanukovych, in 2014." His ouster "led the Russian government to annex Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula."
"The Russian military today is on the rise — not as the same Soviet force that faced the West in the Cold War, dependent on large units with heavy equipment,“ the report says. The rebuild military is "a smaller, more mobile, balanced force rapidly becoming capable of conducting the full range of modern warfare."
From the report, p. 37 ff.:

CYBER

Russia views the information sphere as a key domain for modern military conflict. Moscow perceives the information domain as strategically decisive and critically important to control its domestic populace and influence adversary states. Information warfare is a key means of achieving its ambitions of becoming a dominant player on the world stage.
Since at least 2010, the Russian military has prioritized the development of forces and means for what it terms "information confrontation," which is a holistic concept for ensuring information superiority, during peacetime and wartime. This concept includes control of the information content as well as the technical means for disseminating that content. Cyber operations are part of Russia’s attempts to control the information environment.
The weaponization of information is a key aspect of Russia’s strategy and is employed in time of peace, crisis, and war. In practice, information battles draw upon psychological warfare tactics and techniques from the Soviet Era for influencing Western societies. Moscow views information and psychological warfare as a measure to neutralize adversary actions in peace to prevent escalation to crisis or war. Chief of the General Staff Gerasimov announced that "information operations troops" were involved for the first time in the Kavkaz-2016 strategic command staff exercise in September 2016, demonstrating Russian military commitment to controlling the information domain.
Propaganda Helps Shape The Information Environment
Russian propaganda strives to influence, confuse, and demoralize its intended audience, often containing a mixture of true and false information to seem plausible and fit into the preexisting worldview of the intended audience. Russian propaganda targets a wide variety of audiences, including its own population, selected populations of other countries, domestic and foreign political elites, and the West writ large. The variety of techniques for disseminating Russian propaganda include pro-Kremlin "news" websites and TV and radio channels such as Russia Today and Sputnik News, bots and trolls on social media, search engine optimization, and paid journalists in Western and other foreign media.

  • JUNE 29TH - Voter Fraud Commission, McCain's Opinion Article, Flynn & Russian Hackers, The 25th Amendment, And Much More
  • (A) - VOTER FRAUD COMMISSION AND PUSHBACK BY STATES
  • Kobach
  • Trump
  • Padilla
  • Cuomo
  • Grimes
  • McAuliffe
  • Merril
  • California's Sec. of State Padilla said, "I will not provide sensitive voter information to a commission that has already inaccurately passed judgment that millions of Californians voted illegally. California's participation would only serve to legitimize the false and already debunked claims of massive voter fraud made by the President, the Vice President, and Mr. Kobach. The President's Commission is a waste of taxpayer money and a distraction from the real threats to the integrity of our elections today: aging voting systems and documented Russian interference in our elections"
  • NY Governor Cuomo said, "NY refuses to perpetuate the myth voter fraud played a role in our election. We will not comply with this request."
  • Kentucky Sec. of State Grimes said, "The president created his election commission based on the false notion that "voter fraud" is a widespread issue – it is not. Indeed, despite bipartisan objections and a lack of authority, the President has repeatedly spread the lie that three to five million illegal votes were cast in the last election. Kentucky will not aid a commission that is at best a waste of taxpayer money and at worst an attempt to legitimize voter suppression efforts across the country."
  • Virginia Governor McAuliffe called the request "politically motivated" and "silly posturing." "This entire commission is based on the specious and false notion that there was widespread voter fraud last November. At best this commission was set up as a pretext to validate Donald Trump’s alternative election facts, and at worst is a tool to commit large-scale voter suppression."
  • Connecticut's Sec. of State, Merril said she would, "share publicly-available information with the Kobach Commission while ensuring that the privacy of voters is honored by withholding protected data" and that Kobach "has a lengthy record of illegally disenfranchising eligible voters in Kansas. Given Secretary Kobach's history we find it very difficult to have confidence in the work of this Commission."

  • (B) - MCCAIN ON RUSSIAN THREAT LEVEL
  • McCain

  • Tillerson (by extension)
  • Lavrov (by extension)

Trump's tweet attacks on Mika Brzezinski over an alleged facelift invoke calls for usage of section 4 of the 25th amendment. "The Constitutional provision, which has never been used, can be invoked when a president has been found to be "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office." A majority of the cabinet has to agree that the president is unable to discharge the duties of the office in order to invoke the provision. The order of events would be as follows:
  • Majority of cabinet agrees on invoking the section, submitting declaration to the President pro tempore of the Senate (Hatch) and the Speaker of the House (Ryan)
  • VP assumes powers and duties of office as Acting President
  • President can submit declaration to Hatch and Ryan that no inability exists and resumes powers and duties
  • Unless VP and majority of cabinet, within 4 days, again submit declaration to Hatch and Ryan
  • Thereupon Congress shall assemble within 48 hours to decide the issue. Congress has 21 days, after receipt of 2nd declaration, to determine if the president is unable to discharge powers and duties of the office. Decision must be made by two-thirds of both Houses.
  • VP continues to discharge duties while Congress deliberates. President resumes powers and duties if two-thirds of both Houses do not determine his inability.
  • President may again submit declaration to Hatch and Ryan. VP (then Acting President) and majority of cabinet may again submit declaration to Congress which would begin the 21-day procedure.

2015.09.15 06:22 GooberGrapist [Discussion] What were you doing when you were 20?

Both Zoe Quinn and Sarah Butts have talked about being a young edgelords "like gamergate". They talked about being assholes on the internet "like gamergate". They talk about how they would have been part of us because we were so much like their old terrible selves.
So I'm curious, what were you doing on the internet when you were 20? I went back on to my social media accounts to see what I was doing at 20.
I was a lurker of /v/, but had never posted anything to 4chan. I was spending a lot of time playing discussing and anticipating Warhammer Online and anticipating the release of TF2, then playing a lot of TF2. I was copying the top Digg posts and posting them on Facebook. I was posting Keith Olbermann rants (>_<). I was using music forums a lot trying to find new music that my ex didn't already own in my head. I was playing guild wars factions and nightfall and AvAing. I was sharing my sketches of ideas for video game monsters. I was learning to code. I was doing homework. I was on dating sites looking for a gf near my school. I was chatting on AIM and Skype with my classmates about school and comics and batman movies. I was pirating music from waffle.fm.
EDIT: Sorry I just realized Warhammer Online wasn't out yet. I think I was just playing Guild Wars as my MMO at the time. But I was definitely discussing Warhammer Online a lot (that's why I thought I was already playing it xD)

What is the most embarrassing story about Cenk you can remember? Holy shit, I can spend the next 4 hours telling Cenk stories. One quick story. He went on a date with my ex-GF. When they got back to her place after dinner, things started to get a bit romantic. Then he had to take a dump. She lived in a tiny apt in NYC so when he came out of the bathroom, the place stunk so bad that she had to ask him to leave. She opened all the windows even though it was bone chillingly cold outside.
Big fan of TYT here, been watching since 7th grade.. I'm a high school junior just beginning to look at colleges, and I have a couple questions. 1: what's your advice to someone my age who wants to pursue a career in journalism/polysci? What kind of journalism offers the best jobs, opportunities, etc (I.e. broadcasting, newspapers, etc) 2: what's it been like to see tyt expand so rapidly as it has these past few years? Journalism is dead. Sorry, but it's true. So few people actually do journalism now in the US, which is why TYT is so popular. You don't need to have a degree in anything. Just be well-read and learn everything possible about your world. Read everything.
3: what kind of process do you guys go through when picking stories for the show? what do you look for? 4: What's it like working with a Turkish barbarian like Cenk? It's great to see TYT grow so fast. It'll grow even faster in the next 2 years. Cenk is truly an awesome person. We've been friends for 28 years now and there are few people I've met in my life with as much integrity.
Ana, John, Jayar, Cenk, and Tom pick the stories with input from the rest of the team. We look for things that are important, topical, viral, relevant, and entertaining.
Why are you called the "Audio Guy?" It's a really dumb story that's not really even funny but Cenk finds it hilarious. When I first started at TYT, a YouTube commenter thought I was the audio guy b/c I sat next to Jayar one time. Cenk thought it was really funny that someone mistook me as Jayar's assistant. So he called me that a few times on air.
What does it take to get hired at TYT and what are some positions that you are looking for in the next year? We have a very stringent hiring standard at TYT. First we take people on as an unpaid intern. If they are good, then we make them a paid contractor. Then if we think they have the smarts & the personality & work ethic, etc, we make them an employee. We are slow to hire, but we never fire.
Unpaid intern? Haven't you guys railed on that in the past (I'm thinking Georgia State Government)? Maybe you could expand on that a little. What kind of hours are you talking about? Do these folks typically keep their "day jobs"? They come in a work a few hours a day for a few weeks or a couple of months. They usually have some other income source (usually small). Then we progress to paid contractor and then full employee. The reason for this long process isn't just to save money, but for us to have essentially an extended interview process to make sure that whoever we hire really fits our culture here.
Where do you hope TYT is at in 1 year and 10 years? In one year I want TYT to be at 100 employees with 20 owned and operated shows and 50 channel partners. In 10 years, I want to see TYT offices in UK, Canada, Australia, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, and more
When MSNBC and Cenk parted ways, were you relieved or disappointed? Can we get some "Elbow drop from the Sky" tshirts? Shits hilarious. I get the sense you and Cenk are mentoring the rest of the cast. Any truth to that? Watching the stream of Cenk at the Money Out of Politics conference at UCLA was awesome, can that happen more often? I love Cenk, but it seems like he really dominates the airtime, any way to dole that out more evenly? I feel bad for Ana sometimes =\ My roommates love TYT now, my little bro a PoliSci/Business major, and a few other randoms...but you guys deserve more attention...how do we get there? Who is the ONE person you would love to have on the show for a Cenk Pay Per View beatdown? I was happy when Cenk left MSNBC. His time commitments to MSNBC made my life and those dedicated to the online show much more difficult. MSNBC just wanted Cenk, not TYT. I guess Cenk and I are mentoring others in some ways since we are much older, but we learn so much from them as well. I love the team we have, really smart, dedicated, good people.
Yes, we'll do live streams of TYT staff playing games (not me or Cenk, we don't play video games) Money out of politics conference at UCLA was fantastic, not just Cenk, but all the other panelists and participants. Lessig was his usual outstanding self.
Ana will LOVE you for this comment. Look, Cenk's a talker and it's impossible to shut him up. What can we do? We have been doing a lot more marketing and PR this year and our numbers have shot up. We'll keep doing that. Thank you for spreading the word about us. I'd love to have Bill O'Reiley on for a mano-a-mano showdown with Cenk. That would be great for so many reasons.
We'd love to get NDT on the show. We have been trying to get him on The Point to no avail so far.
A lot of TYT fans get pissed off when you guys do segments on gun control. Pretty much all of the Facebook comments are anti-gun control, and they get a large number of likes. I'm personally neutral on the issue, but I was wondering if you take the dissatisfaction into account, and what your response to one of the main arguments pro-gun TYT watchers use, which is gun control would end up the same as the failed drug war? We are heavily in favor of gun control. The idea that we shouldn't regulate such a deadly device is so idiotic to me. If we can't regulate guns, then maybe we can't regulate explosives. What if I preferred to arm myself with grenade instead of guns. Can I walk into stadiums and churches and schools with a whole bunch of grenades? The 2nd amendment never specifies "guns". It just says "arms", so I guess if we apply the pro-gun logic, we can't regulate ANY weapons.
I don't care what our fan reaction is going to be. We report our opinions and commentary honestly. We don't fake it for popularity. That's why I think our fans love us even when they disagree - b/c we aren't lying or pretending.
What are your responsibilities as a Chief Operating Officer at TYT? I handle all aspects of the business side of TYT, everything from managing our relationship with YouTube, making partnerships with other content creators, green lighting new shows, developing business opportunities with other companies, speaking with potential investors. I also oversee the day to day operations to make sure that things are running smoothly - hiring people, setting schedules, determining salaries and bonuses, etc.
What do you think was the turning point or catalyst for TYT's success? Was there a time when it just surged or was it gradual growth? There was no single turning point. Cenk built this thing brick by brick over a period of many years with a tiny budget and a tiny staff of dedicated, poorly paid, people. We got a real boost during the Bush years when we were the only news outlet screaming AGAINST the Iraq War. Also, we made the critical decision to post our videos on YouTube rather than just on our own website. This was back in 2005 when YouTube first launched. Getting an early start on YouTube really helped.
What is your favorite show on TYT Network? Easy. Pop Trigger. I love this channel even though I generally hate celebrity and pop news. The host, Samantha Schacher is an absolute gem. I totally love her. She is smart, beautiful, engaging, funny, and truly kind. She is fantastic. Bree Essrig is also amazing and we are incredibly grateful that she is part of the show. Lastly Tom Hanc at TYT has done a masterful job of producing the show.
Do you think TYT will one day have a Science channel? That is my dream. I am a massive science geek at heart. We just need to find the right talent to host and produce. I want to do it right, and to do so, it's going to take some money.
A few months ago I saw you at VidCon in front of the Starbucks. I didn't say hello because you seemed preoccupied. Yes, I will be at all VidCons. Please stop by and say hello next time. I am never too busy to meet our audience. We love the support from you guys and we understand that we wouldn't be where we are without you.
Will I get to see you again next year at VidCon 2013? Who from TYT will probably be attending? What about Playlist Live? Not sure about the live playlist. I'll ask our tech guys about that.
What was it like when you lost to my fantasy team in the TYT fantasy football league? Also, how many people try to get jobs at TYT and what do you look for in someone that wants to be part of the actual TYT army? When I lost to you in fantasy football, it was the most painful moment of my life. Not. We get many, many inquiries about working here at TYT. We look for really smart people who are independent minded, easygoing, and have a great work ethic and integrity. Also, I only hire people that I like at a personal level. Would I enjoy or dread sitting next to you on a cross country flight? If the latter, no way do you get hired.
What did you guys do in celebration of the President's victory last month? Nothing. There isn't much to celebrate in my mind. Yes, Romney would have been an utter disaster for the country, but I think Pres Obama has a TON of work to do to help the lives of ordinary Americans and get the country back on the right track. His record on civil liberties is appalling. His position on cutting SS and Medicare to fund tax cuts for corporations scare me. I like Obama and I'm rooting for him, but I'm holding his feet to the fire and want to put as much pressure on him as possible to do what the people want, not the corporations and the wealthiest 0.1%
Has there ever been a time that you and Cenk have ever pissed each other off to the point where there was yelling involved? Yes. This happened many times, usually during sports. We are both hyper competitive and sometimes our emotions get the best of us.
What do you think will happen to news on television? Will there be a place for it in five years? Fifteen years? I think television news has to evolves to become relevant. Fox News viewers are dying off. MSNBC has become the establishment Democratic channel. I'm not sure what CNN is. They have to be HONEST with their reporting and stop calling everything even. TV is dying anyway, and TV news is dying even faster.
Is there a TYT Keith Olbermann feud? Can you guys get Dylan Ratigan on the show so we can get an update on where he is now that he left MSNBC? No feud with KO. He took a few shots at us when he left Current but there was no feud. Cenk and Dylan are good friends. Dylan is taking a well deserved break after his long days working in NYC all these years. He'll resurface in 2013.
Thks for doing this Steve, watching you guys since i was living in NY, and now moved to Istanbul. are you guys planing to open a branch over here in Turkey? And how would you plan to keep your way of thinking with too many different views(if TYT go global), is that means no border, unite? :) thank you for your time Yes!!! We definitely want to expand to Turkey. BTW, I've been to Turkey and LOVED it: Istanbul, Bodrum, Selcuk (sp?), Pammukale, and Ephesus. I'd love to visit again.
Hope to see you guys soon in Istanbul, may be i can work for you guys :) btw spellings are correct 98% That would be great. We should have a meet up with fans in Turkey.
Are you guys considering doing another arm wrestling competition like last year? It seems like it would be much more interesting this time round since TyT has so many more female employees and contributors. No arm wrestling b/c a few of us actually injured ourselves. We want to do other competitions though. Dance off? Ping pong maybe? Not sure yet.
What do you recommend to students or recent grads studying journalism now? Ana and I were both student reporters who didn't end up getting into the small-market news route, but our (especially hers) paths are not easy to imitate. I actually don't have any recommendations b/c I never went to journalism school. Everything is so scripted now on TV and corporate interests seem to trump so much that I find TV journalism just awful (if not dead). Print is much better, but the really good stuff is buried and headlines are often sensational. Not sure what you get out of journalism school and not sure what the best path is. I do love investigative journalism, but less and less of that happening now.
What was your career path prior to becoming COO of The Young Turks? I ran and operated a number of other businesses. When I sold one of them in 2010, Cenk asked me to come on board at TYT. I took on the role of business development but then gradually took over the head of all operations.
We're seeing that digital drives the bus in content production. What initiatives/ plans to you have continue/ strengthen TYT's digital/ online presence? We want to increase the amount of content that we generate, both by increasing the number of shows and increasing the output of each show. Also, we have big plans for global expansion.
How did Cenk's conservatism when he was younger affect your friendship with him? Cenk's youthful conservatism was comical and the rest of the guys in our group bonded by mocking him. Sometimes, he was fucking unbearable. It's great to see his evolution.
Thanks for doing this Steve! great read. Not sure if you are still answering but ill toss you a question. When are you going to visit my nations Capital? Ottawa could use a visit from TYT! What's up, bro?! Great to hear from you. You know how much I love Canada so I'd love to visit Ottawa soon. The problem is, I love Vancouver so much that I'll probably visit there again, which means my next visit to Canada won't be Ottawa.
Wow, that's awesome. Is that recorded somewhere? I went back and forth all night, but missed it. I don't think that's available, but I know they want to have a real debate one day. Stay tuned.
Weren't TYT on Revision3 at some point? What was it like working with them? Why did you guys leave that network? It's a goal of mine to get on Revision3! Yes, we were with Revision 3 and those guys are FANTASTIC to work with and if I had a small YouTube channel, I'd definitely want to be a part of their network. We left them b/c we wanted to be independent. As nice as they were, we just didn't like being part of someone else's network. We wanted to be on our own.
Did they reach out to TYT to be one their network or did you guys go to them? They reached out to us. We are still very close with them and meet up for dinnedrinks all the time.
The other night, Gideon Yu came in and had dinner at the restaurant where I work. He was very unpretentious and I would never have known he was anything other than an average joe wearing a t-shirt if his dining partner hadn't name dropped him when he realized they'd forgotten to make a reservation. Did you get the chance to work with him or correspond with him when he was at YouTube? Is he as unpretentious/awesome all the time as he was that night? Also, do you think Psy will be the first to break 1 billion views? Don't know who Gideon Yu is. Sorry. And yes, Psy will def be the first to break 1 billion views. He is an international sensation and I really can't believe how fast he's become so huge.
What are some BIG issues you've disagreed with Cenk on and why? Not really. We used to disagree quite a bit about gay rights and women's issues, but we pretty much agree now on most of it.
Yeah it's always going to be a bit awkward. If you don't know her that well I think it's probably best to act like you normally would with small talk. Or just perhaps say something you'd say to someone who had a big change that's more typical like losing a lot of weight. So if you met someone a couple of times in a professional setting and they lost a lot of weight the next time you saw them, you probably wouldn't say anything. But if you knew them well you probably would say something positive. I think the same idea applies to people who have transitioned. Most of the proper etiquette comes with what not to ask like about surgery or what medical procedures they've had done. That will be taken in the same way as if anyone was randomly asked about their genitals, not well. Also important is to not ask about their old identity, because trans people are really trying to seen for who they are, and those questions tend to imply you're asking "but who are you really?" This makes sense. Thanks for the feedback.
Was there any weirdness going on between Jennifer Granholm and Cenk during the Current Pres. Election coverage? Cenk was keeping it real, and it seemed like there were a few times she shot off her eye lasers. Mad props to him for keeping it real with one of the Dems' big convention speakers. No weirdness at all. Cenk is very close with Granholm, who is genuinely a sweet person.
What specifically did you find unappealing about a career in law? I was a civil litigator in a large law firm. We represented a huge multi-national corporation. Our client would sue and get sued by other large multi-national corporations. There were millions, sometimes billions at stake so they always settled b/c neither side wanted to risk losing everything. I really didn't give a shit who won or lost and they always settle anyway. They paid well but it was a soulless existence.
Hi Steve, longtime fan here from New Zealand currently studying journalism. It is my goal to bring TYT to new zealand and I see here that you already have plans to expand globally. How exactly are you approaching this aspiration and what advice to you have for those on the other end who wish to help make it happen? Once we have sufficient funding, we want to visit all the different countries where we want to set up TYT and we'll have an audition to hire 4 to 6 hosts for that country's TYT. It will be a while before we make it to NZ, but keep in touch with us so you'll know when we are out there.
Is Ana and Cenk as attractive as they seem online? They both look better on camera than in real life just like most celebrities do, but they look pretty close to what you see. I saw Alec Baldwin once near my house and was horrified at how bad he looked in person. Maybe he was having a particularly bad day.
I'm a composesongwriter and I'd love to write music for the show, whether it be for advertisements or for the breaks. How do you guys select music for the breaks in-between segments during the live shows? Who selects the music? Jayar or whoever is running the sound board (Ricky, Dave Koller, Mark, etc) choose the music during breaks.
Yes, we have several composers who do stuff for us.
If an offender reoffends after getting released from prison instead of getting the death penalty then who's to blame? Did you know 84% of rapists reoffend after getting released from prison? I don't understand your question. We don't execute rapists.
Could you have another all-producers The Point episode? Yes, we will do it the week between Christmas and New Year.
What is TYT? who is cenk/ Www.youtube.com/theyoungturks.
Cenk is the host of the show.
What do you think has been the secret to your success as a COO? No real "secret". Just work hard, have good judgment, do the right thing, and get lucky every now and then.
How hot is Ana in real life, don't lie. Come on, she's like my little sister! No, she's not hot at all to me but most people find her hot.
You should host or co-host more often. Thanks! I get that a lot. I do enjoy co-hosting on occasion but I don't like to do it more than once or twice a month. Besides, I have so many duties here that I really can't host more.
I do declare! Tell how you really feel about Cenk's "rich guy" imitation. It SUCKS. His "rich guy" imitation is the same as his "British" imitation, and he uses the phrase "I do declare" for both, but I told him that that phrase is more of a southern US thing than a British thing. It's his go to move. What can you do?
I just read through all of your answers and half-way through I realized that I was reading them in your voice. I have no idea why your voice has been internalized, but maybe it's like Morgan Freeman and it's just hard to get rid of... Thank you for doing this, very cool! Wow, what a compliment to be compared to Morgan Freeman. Thanks!
Actually, I can't believe you replied to that. :) In all seriousness though, I definitely like what you add to the show and most of your opinions are well-thought out and add to the conversation at hand. I have a huge advantage in only chiming in when I have something smart and well-thought out to say. It's so much harder to host as you're up there just talking extemporaneously. Cenk and Ana do a really amazing job, so I try to give them a pass when they misspeak or misstate something, but I'm a cranky sticker about facts and figures so I get annoyed anyway.
Just a comment, You guys are the best. I watch every video on the main TYT channel and most of the live streams. Best news source ever. You guys dont give a fk what others think. Mainstream media is too mainstream. That's exactly right. We tell it as we see it. That doesn't mean that we are always correct, but it does mean that we always say what we think and that we don't put a corporate spin or suck up to power for access. Thanks for the continued support!
Audio guy, lets see them Korean tits ;) (o) (o)
Drawn to scale.
I just want to say thank you for being the one to consistently regulate on the show; not everyone has what it takes to stick it to Cenk if need be (still love ya Cenk lol). PS: You, Jesus, and Jayar need your own show. NOW. Thanks. I've been calling Cenk out for 28 years now. I agree with him 92% of the time, but when I disagree, I let him know. To his credit, he takes criticism really well. He's the anti-diva, which is great.

Has Canton requested your cleats from any of your 40s at the combines yet? They have not. But I don't let that get me down. I'm going to keep on keeping on until I break that 6 second barrier in a perfectly tailored Amir Fashions suit, tie and pocket square. And once I do, I dare Canton to keep me out. Nay, I double-dare them.
You're a cool dude, Rich Eisen. Without knowing you personally and what you stand for, I accept this with all humility. But, if you're some sort of miscreant, I will forever disavow this exchange.
What is your opinion about how ESPN allegedly pushes its talent to talk about certain topics (Tebow) as much as possible, even if it's not relevant to the discussion? Did similar things happen behind the scenes while you were at ESPN? When I was at ESPN, I was never once told to talk about something. During our SportsCenter ideas meetings, we would discuss what we thought was a hot button topic or the huge sporting event of the day. Never once did a producer come into the room and say that we were mandated to talk about a certain topic or player. For real.
Ok, but now that you work for the NFL covering the NFL are you provided autonomy on your reporting/news gathering or is there a sort of Standards and Practices on how you should not debase the league (or bite the hand that pays you?) Since I started with the NFL Network, which, I can't believe, is now NINE years ago (I've been on NFL Network longer than I was on ESPN), we have been given marching orders only once about what we can NOT talk about -- and that's gambling. We are not allowed to discuss point spreads, overs/unders. Anytime someone brings that up to me, I turn into the NFL version of the Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer -- "Your terms confuse me..." At any rate, I do not have a problem with this. If you need your NFL news through that prism, then NFL Network and my reportage is not for you. I'm fine with that. Otherwise, everything in the NFL is fair game for discussion. Last year, during the lockout, which is the ultimate Defcon moment for the NFL and its ownership, not ONCE were we told what we could and could not talk about. Not once. Within days of being the player rep to inform ownership that the players were not accepting their offer, triggering the owner's move to lockout the players, we had that very player -- Jeff Saturday -- on NFL Total Access for THREE consecutive days. I had a 28-minute long chat with Jeff about the entire subject, soup to nuts. I posted that entire chat on my NFL.com podcast and we aired the chat over two days on NFL Network. Not a single word changed. I'm proud of this. And so is everyone who works on the Network.
Mr.Eisen, First off I'm a huge fan (I signed up for reddit just for this.) and would really appreciate if you could answer my question. I'm a 20 year old student who is majoring in RTV and trying to get into the field (hopefully sports). What did you do in the beginning of your career to separate yourself from the competition? And what did you do to help train and develop your voice? I appreciate it!!! The first thing I'd say (and I'm actually saying it so I don't know why I'd give that cavaet before responding. Call it a crutch) is that you must stay true to who you are. Every single successful person I've met in this industry is exactly who they are off-the-air as you've come to know them on the air: Chris Berman, Stuart Scott, Deion Sanders. They are all genuine articles who are NOT putting on an act. That's who they are. So, just trust your abilities and let it fly. That will separate you. True story. And never EVER take 'No' for an answer. I've had doors slammed in my face (once quite literally) and wouldn't let it get me down for longer than a few moments. Keep on keeping on. In this day and age with blogs, podcasts, internet channels, there are many more ways to find your niche, hone your craft and distribute your work than ever before. Good luck!
So Berman really is that passionate about Applebee's 2 for $20 menu? Yes. I mean, who isn't?
On a scale of 10 to 11, how awkward was this interview? It was a Spinal Tap-like interview. It went to 11. But, I love that sort of stuff. I live for it. On live TV no less.
Did you really just say "Kids love The Reddit." on the radio? I did. And they don't?
Not as much as the enjoy logging into the MyFace. That is one of my all-time favorite Belichick comments. Period.
They do. It was just "the reddit" that caught my attention. It reminds me of how my grandmother talks about going to The Walmart. I know Reddit doesn't have a "the" in front of it. It was my way of inoculating me for any undeserved grief Dan might of thrown my way for coming on here. I know for SURE that Dan hasn't heard of Reddit. But, now that's changed.
Joking aside, things have obviously gone quite well for you since you left ESPN, but how hard was it to make that move? As far as leaving ESPN, it was quite a difficult move, but one that was sort-of made easier for me by management at the time. The SportsCenter I was doing in 2003 was far different from the SportsCenter I loved doing in the mid-to-late 90s. Technology had a lot to do with that, actually. When I first started doing SportsCenter, there were no hand-held devices or widely-viewed websites on which you could already see a final score, let alone watch a streamed, full highlight of how the final score came about. SportsCenter, in the 90s, was essentially the main way for you to find out what happened and see how it happened. That was all changing, from a bottom-line ticker to an explosion of talk-radio and internet sites. So, SportsCenter went from being a show that required a smartly-worded on-camera lead-in to an extended narrative-driven highlight to an information-laden full-screen scorepanel graphic to a show with fewer lead-ins and shorter highlights but far more analysis from analysts who were encouraged to give hard-edged points of view, sometimes in the extreme. It reduced the role of SportsCenter anchor, in my mind, to being more of a traffic cop and occasionally, the role of mediator in a sports-version of Crossfire. I wasn't interested in doing that much. So I wanted to do fewer SportsCenters and more of things within the ESPN and Disney toybox. That wasn't made available to me as much as I would have liked. So I said 'no' enough times that ESPN and I said 'adios' to one another. I haven't looked back since. I love what I do and with whom I do it. Every single day. Greatest experience ever.
Rich, I think you just very eloquently described why I don't watch sportscenter anymore. Back in 90's I would watch 3 hours of it in mornings knowing they were replaying what I had already seen but I loved the show and the Anchors. I remember having discussions with friends in the late 90's as to who had the best lines. Sportscenter was so big then. I just have 2 quick questions if it's not too late: What was your personal favorite line that you had, and what was the best line out of anyone in your opinion? My favorite line involved the Bowe/Golota fight, when Bowe won because of the number of low blows Golota delivered. Days later, Golota's people held a press conference accusing Bowe of faking being hurt by the low-blows and, as proof, had someone wear the same jockstrap cup that Bowe had worn during the fight and then had someone bash that poor cup-wearing schnook right on the cup with a baseball bat. The schnook didn't flinch and, thus, Golota's people thought they had proved Bowe was faking. It was one of the most absurd stories I'd ever seen. So, I did the on-camera lead-in about it and said: "That's boxing in a nutshell." Boom. Thank you, I'll be here all week. As far as best line out of anyone, Dan and Keith had some all-timers, but my favorite was from Kenny Mayne doing an Australian Open tennis highlight of Mary Pierce. Pierce was wearing a particularly low-cut shirt and as she was seen on a highlight bending over to serve, Kenny says: "Mary Pierce down a set, although she doesn't appear to be so here". Now THAT right there, is a winner.
might of. You are going to get so much shit for this. Why?
Just a grammar error...might have Doh!
Have you ever pulled any muscles when you run your annual 40 yard dash? Do you think you would do better if you weren't in a suit? EDIT: For those wondering. Actually, I pulled a hamstring running the 40 at the Combine four years ago. Mike Mayock said it looked like I had gotten shot by a "sniper in the Dome". I was trying so hard to break my personal best that year, that I foolishly attempted the 40 THREE times and, on the third time, boom. There went the hammy. It was the last year I ran the 40 in my actual lace-up dress shoes. Since then, the good folks of Under Armour have been kind to provide me with the latest and greatest in running shoes. I figured that, while fun, I wasn't going to pop an Achilles doing this insanity. But, I'll never not wear a suit and tie doing this. My greatest fear is that, one day, this 40-yard dash endeavor will jump the shark. I think the one way to assure that it does is to actually put on a running outfit and do it. Instead, I run the 40 the only way I know how -- slow.
Hey Rich, huge fan. Who is the most fun to do a broadcast with, either from your podcast, NFLN, or your days at ESPN? At ESPN, obviously Stuart Scott was the one with whom I had the best rapport. We came from completely different sides of the pop culture spectrum and it was a fantastic mix. I thoroughly enjoyed doing SportsCenter with him and Dan Patrick, Keith Olbermann, Mike Tirico, Linda Cohn. Fond memories. As far as NFLN is concerned, I'm blessed to work with some of the best players from our generation as well as great personalities. Deion is one-of-a-kind. I'd go through the wall for him. Marshall Faulk is the Rainman of football. He views the game like no other. He can look at a formation and tell most of the time if an interception is coming, like telling me the number of toothpicks that just fell on the ground. It's a blessing. My podcast is a pure joy to do. I'm proud to say it just passed the 7 million download milestone after just 27 months.
Faulk: "Quick Kurt audible out of this one! " Warner: "Marshall we're retired and sitting on a soundstage" Faulk: "My bad" Wait a minute. Do you have a mic on our set? How did you know that they had that very verbatim exchange just last week?
Steve Weatherford should have been Superbowl MVP. True statement or truest statement? I can not speak to the veracity of the statement you've just made except to say that I believe that punters are not only people, but they're weapons and if you think they're most valuable well, then, you're right. Let's band together and help people see the truth about punters.
As a collegiate Punter, I thank you for this. Keep spreading the good word. Punters at all levels deserve our respect. You are people!!!
What's the worst thing that's happened while you were on air? When I was at my first job on local TV in Redding California, the entire sportscast crashed on me -- video, graphics, teleprompter, everything. It was my "Boom Goes the Dynamite" moment where I felt I had to reference how bad everything was going. So, I looked directly into the television camera and said "I'm broiling in my own sweat" -- which I actually was. If you can't have fun with something like that you're in the wrong business.
Funniest athlete you ever met? Chad Johnson is one of the funniest for sure. He once told me that if he ever made it to the Super Bowl, he would show up to the media day wearing only a towel. When he said it to me back in 2005, I think he thought the circumstances would be making the Super Bowl with the Bengals and Marvin Lewis. That's because when he finally made it last year with the Patriots, there was no towel to be seen. I don't think Belichick would have gone for that. At any rate, Chad has a great sense of humor. But number one for me is Deion. That man could go joke for joke with Chris Rock. As for current players, it's Matt Hasselbeck. He is laugh-out-loud funny and has a future in TV the moment he wants it. I'm rooting for him to stay on the winning path in Tennessee first, though.
Hi, I'm about 15 minutes or so late to the AMA. Can I still get a fruit cup? Sorry. It's been a long-established rule. Those who are late do NOT get fruit cup. I know. I'm so strict.
As of today, what are your current superbowl predictions? Going into the season I had the Patriots vs. the 49ers and, despite the obvious malaise that currently ails the Patriots and 49ers, I'm not coming off that prediction just yet. But if I was given a mulligan right now, I'd go with the Texans and Giants. That said, I'm not ready for a Super Bowl Breakfast Ball just yet.
What are your thoughts on the international series going forward? I think sending a 2nd game there next year as the league is doing is a great thing. Everything I hear from the UK is overwhelmingly positive. If an NFL team wants to give up a domestic home game to play one abroad, I'm fine with that. I still need to be convinced that a franchise can be based there but, for the time being, I'm jealous of Marshall Faulk that he's over there this week. I'd love to see the scene at Wembley in person and hope that, for one of the two International Series games in the UK next year, that we can do NFL GameDay Morning from outside Wembley and then go inside to see the proceedings. It would be a career highlight for me.
Have you begun training for the 2013 combine 40 yard dash? Yes. I'm working on my core with a quality regimen of pilates and yoga-lates and venti mocha-lattes. By the time, I get to Indy I should have enough powerhouse strength and caffeine to get me past that elusive 6-second barrier.
Do Punters put on their pants one leg at a time, just like me? Are you a person? If so, then yes.
Biggest bust this year: Terrell Owens or the replacement refs? Replacement refs. By far. Terrell Owens didn't affect a team's win/loss record or cost several coaches several tens of thousands of dollars in fines.
What has been the biggest contributing factor(s) to or to what/whom do you owe your success in entertainment & broadcasting to? There's so many people who have helped me along the way, from colleagues, like KRCR-TV's Mike Mangas -- my first sports director who no doubt helped save my job many a time -- to Keith Olbermann, who helped (with many tough-love-type scenarios) guide me in the early SportsCenter years in becoming more of a less-is-more type of broadcaster. Then there's folks who I idolized growing up, like Marv Albert and Howard Cosell and a WPIX-TV sportscaster named Jerry Gerard, who was doing SportsCenter-type broadcasts years before ESPN existed. But, mainly, it's my parents who supported me in my college and low-wage post-college endeavors. They never asked me if I was doing the right thing or if I should try something else. They always supported me to help get me started. And then, while at ESPN, I met my wife, (and also a fellow broadcaster) Suzy Shuster, who helped me hone what I was doing and how I presented it in a way that's helped me take things to, what I hope all will agree, is a new level.
Who is starting on your fantasy football team this week? Ben at QB, Lesean/Turner at RB, Julio/VJax at WR, Graham at TE if healthy and Miller if Graham can't go, Decker at flex, Arizona D and Young GZ at Kicker. That's one league in which I'm 3-4. Another league in which I'm leading at 5-2, it's Brees at QB, TurneMendenhall at RB and TurneDwyer if Mendenhall can't go, Jordy/VJax at WR, Gronk at TE, Vernon at Flex, Chicago D and Barth at K.
Keith Olberman and Dan Patrick were fucking amazing. Stuart may hate me for saying this, but they were the best tandem at SportsCenter...ever.
Please! explain that fascination with Tebow. I think it's a Skip Bayless thing. Which is not my thing.
Minus the waking up at 330, what is the absolute worst part about your job. Zero. No complaints. It's a privilege to do this. Seriously. I'm blown away that anyone wants to do an AMA with me.
I would fly out of bed at 3:30 if it meant I was able to be on the NFLN! I'm not even a serious football fan but I love this AMA, you seem to be a very humble and intelligent person. You have yourself a fan good sir. Keep up the good work. Thanks very much. Become a serious football fan. Life becomes more fun that way.
Not a question, just wanted to say I love, love, love when you're on the DP show. You two are hilarious together!! Thanks. DP and I go back a very long way -- to 1996, when I first started on SportsCenter and he would, essentially, haze me every night. I would do the 2AM late LATE night SportsCenter, for which a lot of the highlight tapes would come from the 11pm ET show that Dan did with Keith. So when those tapes came back from the control room, I would immediately start looking at them to prepare. Frequently, as I was looking at them, I would feel this presence hanging over me. Frequently, it was Dan just back up from the studio after the 11PM show was over, staring at me saying, in his sotto voce: "So...you nervous?" Classic. 2009.08.29 00:07 dbasch I got an accidental email from a nut supporting Glen Beck. How should I troll everyone he emailed?

I got a random email from some nut in Ohio where he attempts to defend Glen Beck's lunacy. How should

I respond to everyone on his email list?

I am thinking I might just respond a few clips of him saying his usual batshit crazy stuff. Any ideas for a more effective counter argument or outright troll?

Below is an article on Glenn Beck who recently has had a great loss in sponsorship due to comments he made about the president. I believe that freedom of speech is a very important liberty that we as all Americans find very near and dear to our hearts as it was one of the freedoms that our forefathers were willing to lay their lives down for. Usually it is the left side that is crying about their right to freedom of speech more loudly than anyone else, except in this case when it is inconvenient for them. Please read the article below (especially the highlighted area) and determine for yourself if Beck should be considered an American Patriot for exposing the President or not.
Also attached is a letter written by my attorney to several of the sponsors who have now abandoned Beck. Please forward to all our your family and friends.
Respectfully yours,
Random Idiot
American & Proud Ohioan
So, the number of corporate sponsors that have pulled their advertising dollars from The Glenn Beck Program grew to 20 on Tuesday. Walmart, Best Buy and Travelocity joined the list of companies that, depending on your point of view, should be classified as either responsible corporate citizens or easily bullied cowards.
The statements of the corporations themselves tend to confirm the second option. But first the background:
Glenn Beck is a conservative commentator whose television show airs at 5 p.m. daily Eastern Time on the Fox News Channel, where it attracts an enormous (for cable, at that hour) audience of some 2.3 million souls. His audience has exploded this year, apparently riding a tide of conservative resentment over the poor economy, the supposedly liberal media, and Democratic Party control in Washington .
"You are not alone," Beck tells his viewers. Millions of people like to hear such assurances, even when coming from a polished performer whose histrionics are obvious. Beck doesn't mind crying on the air. His soliloquies range in tone from rants to raves, often spiced with a dash of paranoia. Recent Beck-isms include a claim that the U.S. Mercury dime has a secret fascist symbol on it, that FEMA was secretly setting up concentration camps ( Beck actually went out of his way to disprove this rumor. Thanks to Bob, Carol , Virginia and many others for pointing this out), that global warming is fiction, and that a single-payer health care system is the first step to a society being forced to "goose-step."
Earlier this year, Beck compared himself in an interview with The New York Times to Howard Beale, the unglued anchorman in the 1976 classic movie, "Network." Beale was famous for saying that he was "mad as hell" and wasn't going to take it anymore. But Beck's persona has a quite un-mad aspect to it. As it happens, driving progressive Democrats cuckoo is quite profitable – and fairly easy to do these days. In that same interview with The Times, Beck volunteered that he is like a "rodeo clown," dancing in front of the (liberal) bulls and broncos for the audience's entertainment.
His Web site advertises Beck as The Fusion of Entertainment and Enlightenment. Human Lightning Rod is more like it. But all of his past comments put together do not equal the furor Beck ignited on July 28, when he accused President Obama of being "a racist." Here is how it went down: Beck and his guest panelists were discussing the controversial arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. – and Obama's ill-fated comments regarding said arrest. That's when Beck began channeling his inner rodeo clown.
Beck: "This president, I think, has exposed himself as a guy, over and over and over again, who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture, I don't know what it is . . ."
At that point, Fox News's Brian Kilmeade interjects, pointing out that many of Obama's closest White House advisers are white (he doesn't mention Obama's own mother). "You can't say he doesn't like white people . . ."
Unfazed, Beck replies: "I'm not saying he doesn't like white people. I'm saying he has a problem. This guy is, I believe, a racist."
To a group called ColorofChange.org, this wasn't entertainment, it was hate speech. ColorofChange.org is an online membership organization that exists, according to its mission statement, "to strengthen Black America's political voice."
The group was founded by Van Jones, who left in 2007 for another activist organization, Green for All, and who now works in the Obama administration as a top adviser on "green" jobs at the White House Council on Environmental Quality. Jones' replacement at ColorofChange.org is James Rucker, and he quickly concluded after the Obama-is-a-racist comment that Glenn Beck is an impediment to his organization's objectives and should be removed from the airwaves. His weapon of choice: An e-mail campaign by ColorofChange.org members to advertising agencies and corporate sponsors that advertise on Fox News during the daily Beck hour.
Beck's commentary, Rucker declared, was "repulsive, divisive, and shouldn't be on the air." His effort has met with surprising success. The list of companies that agreed includes Geico, CVS, Men's Wearhouse, Radio Shack, Procter & Gamble, and State Farm Insurance. This is a little strange, even granting Rucker's description of Beck's language being "repulsive" and "divisive." Heck, let's add "witless" and "obviously inaccurate" to the litany. But the phrase "shouldn't be on the air," well now, that is really raising the stakes to the point that we are playing a different kind of game here. So let's also call this burgeoning secondary boycott for what it is: attempted censorship.
"We are heartened to see so many corporate citizens step up in support of our campaign against Glenn Beck," said Rucker, executive director of ColorOfChange.org. "Their action sends a clear a message to Glenn Beck: Broadcasters shouldn't abuse the privilege they enjoy by spewing dangerous and racially charged hate language over the air. No matter their political affiliation, hate language doesn't belong in our national dialogue."
Leaving aside the dated notion that free expression over the airwaves is a "privilege," the problem here is that the outrage against playing the race card in politics is selective. Is it not also repulsive and divisive when Keith Olbermann invites an angry actress named Janeane Garafalo on his show to dismiss conservative protestors as "a bunch of racists?" As Olbermann mumbles audible sounds of encouragement, Garafalo adds: "Let's be very honest about what this is about . . .This is about hating a black man in the White House. This is racism straight up. This is nothing but a bunch of tea-bagging rednecks."
If you don't remember ColorofChange.org's boycott against Olbermann and NBC, that's because it never happened. Good thing, too, because you can bet some of these cringing companies would have been susceptible to that as well.
"We have instructed our advertising agency to inform Fox to ensure Glenn Beck's program is not part of our advertising plan," Carolyn Castel, a vice president for corporate communications at CVS, one of the 20 Beck boycotters, said in an e-mail to ColorofChange.org. "Our position is simple. We support vigorous debate, especially around policy issues that affect millions of Americans, but we expect it to be informed, inclusive and respectful, in keeping with our company's core values and commitment to diversity."
Really? By that logic, CVS wouldn't be able to advertise on most of the shows on cable television. (Rite Aid, I sense an opening!) But seriously, since when did it become some corporate suit's prerogative to make sure that political discourse on talk shows is politically correct? Are we heading into an era of "red" corporations and "blue" corporations? Travelocity for Democrats and Orbitz for Republicans? (Would James Carville and Mary Matalin even end up on the same flights?)
Many moons ago, I covered a Senate race in which a black North Carolina Democrat named Harvey Gantt tried to unseat Jesse Helms, a white Republican with a deeply conservative record – and one not terribly enlightened on race. Some of the state's Democrats privately urged home state basketball star Michael Jordan to endorse Gantt and maybe even make a television spot. The great symbol of Nike shoes declined, and in doing so, sent word to the Gantt emissaries to the effect that "Republicans buy shoes, too."
At the time, I found Jordan 's self-imposed neutrality to be crass. I may have misjudged the man. In his view that corporate profits and politics don't mix, Jordan seems to have been was ahead of his time. Finally, let's contemplate for a moment the likely effects of this Glenn Beck boycott:
(1) More attention, and thus, possibly more viewers for Glenn Beck.
(2) A sympathy backlash (like this column) from people who normally wouldn't dream of defending Glenn Beck, but who will almost always defend free speech.
(3) A backlash boycott against Olbermann, or whomever, on the part of angered conservatives.
(4) The spreading perception that some liberals are often willing to employ tactics that are quite illiberal when it comes to those with whom they disagree.
(5) More opportunity on Beck's show for him to spew goofy opinions, precisely because the advertisers have fled, leaving him with more time to fill.
